We all scream for ice cream! You heard our recent call-out online and gave us the inside scoop on your favourite ice creameries in SA.
1. Robe Ice Cream & Lolly Shop
Location: Limestone Coast
Just as colourful as Robe Ice Cream & Lolly Shop’s ice cream display are the intricate wall murals by owner Neil Welsh.
Hints of this quirky shop’s creativity can also be found in its delicious ice cream, with flavours such as M&M, bubblegum, multi-coloured triple swirl. You’ll feel like a kid in a candy (or ice cream) shop.
2. Golden North
Location: Mid North
The SA-owned ice cream brand has been crowned the best ice cream in Australia on several occasions. Now see for yourself why Golden North is the cream of the crop with a road trip to its factory in Laura – a small town in the state’s Mid North. Don’t forget to try their well-known liquorice ice cream.
3. Barossa Valley Ice Cream Company
Location: Barossa Valley
The handcrafted ice cream at Barossa Valley Ice Cream Company is proudly made using home-grown produce. Fruit used in some flavours are plucked from SA’s diverse regions, including Adelaide Hills’ strawberries and Riverland blood oranges.
4. Gelato Bello
Location: Glynde
Translating to ‘beautiful gelato’, Gelato Bello’s creamy frozen treats live up to it name. The original owner travelled from Sicily to South Australia with his gelato recipe in 1996.
Starting with just six basic flavours, Gelato Bello has since added new tastes to the menu including banana caramel pie.
5. Clifford’s Honey Farm
Location: Kangaroo Island
How far would you go for a good ice cream? Apparently, many ice cream lovers would cross the Backstairs Passage to visit Kangaroo Island’s Clifford’s Honey Farm.
While it isn’t your typical ice creamery, the farm’s honey ice cream isn’t lost among the many other sweet products on display, such as lip balm and biscuits.
Owners Dave and Jenny make their frozen treat just that bit sweeter with the help of their busy little employees – Ligurian bees. You could say the honey produced from these rare bees is the secret ingredient that makes this ice cream one-of-a-kind.
6. 48 Flavours
Locations: CBD, Paralowie and Trinity Gardens
Talk about spoilt for choice. SA gelateria 48 Flavours has a flavour for every palate, from classics like vanilla and chocolate, to Asian inspired varieties like durian and black sesame.
But it’s not just South Aussies who love 48 Flavours. In 2017, the gelateria won the People’s Choice Award for its pear, gorgonzola, organic fig and toasted walnut gelato at the Gelato World Tour in Italy. Italians sure do know a good gelato when they taste one.
7. Bottega Gelateria
Locations: Henley Beach and Glenelg
Gelato is art, according to Bottega Gelateria’s owner Adriano Macri. And he creates quite the masterpiece, regularly using fresh fruit in his gelato which has been handpicked from family members’ and even customers’ trees – think peach, quince and even lime. Treat yourself!
