6 ice creameries to try this summer

Chill out with a sweet treat.

Love lemon gelato? Perhaps you crave chocolate, or maybe you prefer contemporary flavours like salted caramel or fig and walnut.

Summer has arrived, and there’s no better way to celebrate than with an ice cream, whether it’s in a cup, on a cone or a stick.

To help you find the best sweet iced treat, we’ve come up with a list of 6 of our favourite ice cream shops in SA.

1. Coffee Barn and Gelateria, Yorke Peninsula

Arguably the best ice creamery on the Yorke Peninsula, Coffee Barn and Gelateria has fan-favourite gelato flavours like chocolate, lemon and coffee.

You’ll also find varieties like Nutella, pear and caramel, and white chocolate and cherry.

But homemade icy treats aren’t the only thing this quirky little café sells. They also serve fruit-filled pancakes with whipped cream and a scoop of gelato.

2. Bottega Gelateria, Henley Beach

Get set for some world-class gelato at Bottega Gelateria on Seaview Rd.

You won’t find any pre-made mixtures or artificial flavourings at this shop, with everything made from scratch.

Owner and founder Adriano Macri uses some of the world’s best ingredients to flavour his gelato.

He procures first-rate hazelnuts from Piemonte region in Northern Italy, while sourcing locally produced pecans from the Riverland.

The high-quality ingredients shine through, with Bottega offering delicious, creamy gelato.

3. Robe Ice Cream & Lolly Shop, Robe

This laid-back ice creamery and lolly shop on the Limestone Coast serves house-made ice cream with a side of art.

Peruse the life-size murals adorning the walls and ceiling while you indulge in flavours like boysenberry swirl, Jamaican rum and blueberry sorbet.

Robe Ice Cream & Lolly Shop is just one of the Limestone Coast’s highlights.

Visit The Cave Garden in Mount Gambier, feast on prize-winning beef at Mayura Station or taste the many wines the Coonawarra region has to offer.

4. Clifford’s Honey Farm, Kangaroo Island

Kangaroo Island is renowned for its world-famous honey, so it makes sense to mix it with luscious ice cream.

Clifford’s Honey Farm at Kingscote does just that. Using honey produced by rare Ligurian bees that call Kangaroo Island home, Dave and Jenny Clifford create an ice cream perfect for a hot summer day.

5. 48 Flavours, various Adelaide locations

We couldn’t go past an ice cream shop that has 48 fabulous flavours of gelato.

The family-owned gelateria has 3 stores, located at Trinity Gardens, Paralowie and on Gouger St in the CBD.

No matter where you live, you won’t have any problem finding a favourite flavour.

Although 48 flavours’ gelato is made the traditional Italian way, it’s also renowned for some uncommon varieties like taro and coconut, durian, and its award-winning pear and gorgonzola with fig and toasted walnut.

6. Kitchen 2C, Hahndorf

For those looking for something a bit lighter, Kitchen 2C stocks a range of locally made Sunshine Ice Blocks.

These ice blocks – which are all organic, vegan and refined sugarless – come in various flavours, rotated fortnightly depending on the season.

A few favourites include lemonade and lavender, chocolate, avocado, and blood orange.
