Do you fancy a trip that'll leave you feeling on top of the world?
That’s the guarantee when you visit the majestic Himalayas and trek ‘the steps to heaven’ to the camp at the base of the world’s tallest peak, Mount Everest.
However, it’s not all about the stunning vistas opening around every bend in the trail or the beautiful forests and friendly Nepalese, as trekker Tara Bria (pictured below) recently discovered.
She also enjoyed the most delicious cheesecake she had ever eaten at a French bakery at a village along the way.
‘It was almost as good as the beer I drank at the end of the 10-day journey,’ Tara says.
The 31 year old was among a party of trekkers who were having the experience of a lifetime and raising money for charity while they did so.
‘You realise how small you are when surrounded by such gigantic peaks,’ the marketing manager says.
‘The scenery was so mystical you could understand why the local people believed the mountains have spirits. Each mountain is a god with different names and stories according to local legend.
‘One wow moment was when we could see storm clouds coming around the mountains at the same height level as yourself,’ she adds.
Tara says the countryside at the start of the trek comprised beautiful forests and villages before becoming rocky and almost like a moonscape.
She says the track was ‘nice and smooth’ and, while she’s ‘no athlete’, she suggests people be fit enough and mentally prepared to walk up and down hill while carrying a pack if they want to tackle the trek.
‘Crossing river ravines on swing bridges can also be a bit scary, but you do build your confidence,’ she adds.
Tara’s trip began in the Nepalese capital of Kathmandu, home to 1.6 million people.
‘There were people everywhere, but they were absolutely lovely and seemed to be celebrating a festival every day.
‘The food was a bit like Indian cuisine but with less spice and I enjoyed the dumplings and dahl but there was western food available too.’
