Who needs a canvas and paintbrush when you have a wall and spray can? Artists have been painting on bricks and mortar since ancient times.
From cave paintings to Egyptian tombs and frescos, blank spaces have been artists’ canvases throughout history.
Fast forward to New York in the 1970s, where an explosion of graffiti on subway trains sparked a worldwide street art movement.
Inevitably, the aerosol revolution made it to Adelaide – a city that prides itself on art and pushing boundaries.
Jimmy C, Jasmine Crisp and Vans the Omega are just some of the well-known South Australian street artists who have helped transform the city into an evocative open-air gallery. Once drab walls are now bursting with colour, feeling and personality.
