This wasn’t the only concerning finding in the Speed limits in South Australia study. Worryingly, almost half of the 1400 motorists surveyed admitted to occasionally speeding more than 10km/h over the limit.

RAA Senior Manager Road Safety Charles Mountain said speeding motorists were not only risking a fine, but also their lives, and those of other road users.

“Research shows speed continues to be a major contributing factor to serious and fatal crashes,” Mr Mountain said.

“even small increases in speed mean you travel a longer distance before your react, combined with a longer stopping distance.

Even creeping 5-10km/h over the speed limit is potentially dangerous, and all speed limits should be observed.”

The survey also found 73% of motorists were likely to speed when overtaking.

“The extent of speeding while overtaking highlights why the RAA calls for overtaking lanes at regular intervals on regional roads,” Mr Mountain said.

“We want to ensure motorists can pass other vehicles safely and without exceeding the speed limit.”

Life in the slow lane

The survey also showed 54% of respondents supported lowering speed limits from 60km/h to 50km/h in built-up areas with a crash history.

More than half believe a 50km/h speed limit on residential roads is reasonable.

However, 16% are unaware of the correct speed limit when passing an emergency services vehicle.

“This highlights the need for greater public awareness that motorists need to slow down to 25km/h when passing an emergency services vehicle which has its lights flashing,” Mr Mountain said.
