However, more than 70 motorists were caught drink driving, including a motorist at Port Wakefield who blew almost five times over the legal limit.

The 42-year-old man from Balaklava was charged with driving under the influence, issued with an instant 12-month loss of licence, and had his vehicle impounded for 28 days.

Of the 1001 drug tests conducted by police, a staggering 101 drivers returned a positive reading – more than double the people caught for the same offence during last year’s Easter period.

More than 1200 motorists were fined for speeding, with 50 people caught driving 30km/h or over the speed limit.

RAA road safety expert Charles Mountain said that while most motorists were well behaved, the statistics show that some people are still flouting the road rules.

“It’s concerning that so many motorists were caught speeding over the long weekend,” Mr Mountain said. “Motorists are not only risking a fine but also their lives and those of other road users when they break speed limits.”

While the Easter long weekend might be over, the school holidays mean there are still families travelling on  regional roads.

Sadly, statistics show that 70% of fatal crashes across the state occur in country South Australia.

Mr Mountain advised motorists to take the necessary precautions during peak holiday periods.

“Follow the road rules and adhere to safe driving practices,” he said

“Heavy traffic combined with driver fatigue can prove dangerous, so give yourself plenty of time on your journey, schedule regular breaks, and take into account that roads might be more congested during peak holiday periods.

“Be particularly careful about where and when you overtake on our regional roads and wait until there is an overtaking lane.”
