Smashed windows, broken locks and fallen ceilings. Problems can occur at any time, and sometimes, you just can’t wait.
When life throws something unexpected your way, it can be tricky to know what to do next. Here are three common scenarios and how you can unstick a sticky situation.
1. Your window has been smashed
The scenario: Smash! It’s a Saturday afternoon and the kids have been playing cricket in the backyard again. Your daughter hits the ball for six – straight through the large window. The glass shatters, leaving the house exposed. There’s no way you can wait until Monday to replace it.
What to do: A broken window doesn’t just cause a mess, but also leaves your home susceptible to the weather, unwelcome critters and break-ins. Carefully clean up any glass that may have fallen on the floor, but avoid touching the window frame as sharp edges could cause injury. Tape a sheet or cover over the exposed window if it’s safe to do so and then contact your insurer.
2. Part of your roof is damaged
The scenario: Strong winds and heavy rain are forecast, so you batten down the hatches. However, in the middle of the night, you hear a loud crash and water begins to pour from the ceiling. A branch has fallen on your roof leaving you exposed to the elements. You need help fast.
What to do: Safety first. Call 000 for any life-threatening emergencies. If you’re in the clear, don’t try to fix it yourself. It’s wet and could be dangerous. Instead, call the SES on 132 500. They can assist in certain emergency situations like a flood or storm.
Once it’s safe, if you have home and contents insurance, contact your insurer about making a claim. If the incident has created an unsafe environment for you at home, then the solution for RAA Insurance holders is a ‘make safe’ claim.
3. There has been a break in
The scenario: You’ve come home from dinner with friends and your front door is slightly ajar. It seems someone has broken into the house, and you notice a few items are missing. What do you need to do?
What to do: It’s easy to get caught up wanting to find out exactly what has been taken, but before you look around, avoid potential confrontation with the thief and find a safe location to call the police. Once the police arrive, take inventory of what’s missing, including a description and value.
Then, it’s time to start the insurance process. If home security has been compromised, such as a broken lock, contact your insurer. If you have a home and contents policy with RAA Insurance, they can help you with the next steps. If you’re able to lock up okay, head online to make a claim for your stolen goods at any time of day.
