More than 6000 electric vehicles have been sold across Australia in the first half of this year, according to the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries.
That might not sound like many, but it’s double the electric vehicles sold last year. And the appetite for EVs is only increasing.
A recent RAA survey also found that 40% of South Australians would consider an EV on their shopping list when considering buying their next car.
While there has been an uptake in electrical vehicles, South Australians still have questions about the new technology. How do they handle? What’s their range? How much noise do they make?
Fortunately, RAA Mobility Technology Specialist Mark Borlace has answered some of them for you in the video below.
Mr Borlace says he expects the purchase of electric vehicles to continue to increase in the next few years.
“Motorists want to reduce greenhouse emissions and electric vehicles can help them do that,” he says.
“Electric vehicles produce less pollution than petrol vehicles [and] this technology is particularly effective in South Australia, as the majority of our power green electricity through solar and wind.”
One of motorists’ main concerns about electric vehicles is a lack of charging stations in South Australia.
That’s all about to change though, with the State Government announcing in May it will install 530 new fast-charging stations across the state by 2023.
The proposed network includes stations in Marla, Leigh Creek, Ceduna, Renmark and Mount Gambier.
It’s all part of the State Government’s plan to make electric vehicles the car of choice by 2035.
If you’ve been thinking about making the switch to an EV but want to try before you buy, from early September you’ll be able to take one for a test drive thanks to Flexicar. A Hyundai Kona will be available to drive at RAA’s Mile End headquarters. The EV can be booked for as little as an hour, so you can take it for a spin.
Looking for a longer-term EV option? RAA’s new car subscription service has the MG ZS Essence available, with loads of added perks included as part of subscription.
