It seems classy can be cheap after all – especially for more owners of classic vehicles. They can now drive their pride and joy on the road without dipping too deep into their back pocket.
Under the State Government’s Conditional Registration Scheme, historic or left-hand drive vehicles 25 years or older are now eligible for cheaper rego and third party insurance.
Previously, vehicles had to be 30 years or older to qualify for reduced fees.
Owners are entitled to drive their historic vehicle within Australia for up to 90 days during any 12-month registration period.
The original scheme came into effect in 1992 to provide owners of historic vehicles an exemption from full registration charges, and required them to only pay a third party insurance premium, administration fees and a reduced emergency services levy.
To be eligible, owners must also be a financial member of an approved motor club, keep a log of each trip, and not hire or be remunerated for the use of the vehicle.
