If you’re still running a household on inefficient incandescent or halogen light bulbs, here’s a tip on how to slash your electricity bills – ditch them.
Most homes could reduce the amount of energy they use for lighting by 50% or more by making smarter lighting choices and moving to more efficient technologies.
They’re not hard to find, and compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) and light emitting diodes (LEDs) are the most readily available.
Out of these two choices, LED lighting is generally the most efficient technology you can buy.
Even though they’re generally the most expensive at the counter, LEDs are four to seven times more efficient than the typical incandescent or halogen equivalent, and last five to 10 times longer than a halogen bulb.
Be aware that some lower-quality LEDs may not provide you with enough light, may flicker when dimmed or fail prematurely, so choose wisely.
Bulbs aside, letting in natural light through windows, skylights, and light tubes is another effective option to consider when finding ways to cut costs, and can reduce your need for other forms of lighting.
