Renowned for its coastal and culinary delights, the Fleurieu Peninsula adds a little bit of Hollywood magic one weekend a year.
Now in its seventh year, the Fleurieu Film Festival showcases the work of new and emerging filmmakers through an eclectic program of shorts made to a signature theme.
This year’s theme is ‘gift’.
Festivalgoers can enjoy tasty fresh produce, delicious wines and awesome films at a gala awards night to be held on Saturday, 4 February, at the McLaren Vale and Fleurieu Coast Visitor Centre.
Sounds like fun, doesn’t it? It got us thinking about film festivals around the world. Sure, there are major events like Cannes, Sundance, Venice, Berlin and Toronto. But what about some of the quirkier festivals out there?
Check out these wild, weird and wonderful film festivals.
1. International Moustache Film Festival
Portland, Maine, USA.
Held in Portland, Maine – not to be confused with the city in Oregon – this festival only accepts movies that are moustache themed or feature actors with a bristle baton above their upper lip. The International Moustache Film Festival is part of Portland Facial Hair Fest, with awards including Best Stache Growth Story and Best Stache Shaving Story.
2. Food Film Fest
New York, USA
Food is a big part of the whole movie experience – popcorn, choc-tops and Jaffas are staples of the film buff’s diet. Skip the snack bar at this film festival because you can eat the dishes you see on the big screen. A menu is placed on seats at each screening to let the audience know the dishes being served and who is making them, then they’re delivered by volunteers. Yum!

3. Bring Your Own Film Festival
Puri, India
Just about every film festival requires filmmakers to submit their movies. Then, they go through a formal selection process before being accepted or rejected. Scrap that. Here, you just show up with your film and play it on the big screen. Guaranteed. There isn’t a competition, jury or awards, which probably makes it the most egalitarian film festival in the world.
4. Golden Apricot Yerevan International Film Festival
Yerevan, Armenia
The Academy Awards has Oscar, the sparkling gold statue that filmmakers and actors dream about winning. The Golden Apricots has, well, golden apricots. Best Film winners in the short and feature film categories take home the festival’s top gong while silver apricots are handed out as a special prize. As the unofficial national fruit of Armenia, the apricot is a symbol of great pride.

5. KahBang Film and Music Festival
Maine, USA
Films are secondary at this festival. While it includes music and film, each year there’s a special Kevin Norwood Bacon Achievement Award handed out based on the popular ‘Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon’ game. All you must do is prove that you’re somehow connected to Hollywood star Kevin Bacon of Animal House, Friday the 13th and Footloose fame. Everybody cut loose!
