The bathroom can be a haven where you can wash the day away and relax, but if it’s not regularly maintained it can quickly become a mouldy mess. Here are some tips to keep your bathroom looking schmick.
Ventilation
Increased humidity and moisture in your bathroom can cause serious issues like mould. Exhaust fans, which take the air from your bathroom and expel it outside, can improve airflow and reduce the chance of mould growing. Clean your exhaust fan regularly as dust can build up over time and stop it from working properly. Wash the fan with some warm water and dishwashing detergent, then dry with paper towel. It also helps to leave a window partially open to aid with ventilation.
Fix leaks
What might start off as a small drip can cause considerable damage to your home and add to your water bill. If you suspect a leak, look for wet patches, mould or mildew on the ceilings, swollen cabinetry or skirting boards, and peeling paint. If there’s a leak, you may need to contact a plumber.
Check your hot-water unit
Running out of hot water on a cold winter’s morning isn’t the best way to start the day. To avoid disaster, get your hot-water unit checked so you aren’t caught out. Need an upgrade? There are plenty of options available. Choose from electric or gas, or even go with a solar-powered model.
Check the grout
Often overlooked, grout holds tiles together and ensures water doesn’t get under them and damage the dry wall or floor. If the seal is compromised, mould could also become an issue. If there are cracks in the grout, it’s worth replacing it to keep your bathroom hygienic. To keep grout in good condition, be sure to clean it regularly using baking soda or a store-bought cleaner and a toothbrush.
Keep it clean
Clean up any spills like makeup or soap remnants as they happen, and you’ll save yourself a bigger job later. Soap scum, toothpaste and hair can build up in your pipes and cause blockages resulting in water that won’t drain. Sprinkle baking soda on the sink hole, then pour boiling water down the drain to clear the gunk. It’s a great alternative to harsh chemicals.
