Pub meals are as Australian as throwing a shrimp on the barbie and beach cricket. Whether it’s a Sunday session, or Friday night dinner, the pub has long been an Aussie favourite. But the way we dine changes once kids come along.
So we’ve searched for our favourite family-friendly pubs that offer a little something extra for the kiddies.
1. Uraidla Hotel
Uraidla
You’ll find chickens, a beehive, veggie patches and loads of space to safely roam and explore at the historic Uraidla Hotel. Set in the idyllic Adelaide Hills, the hotel offers the ultimate kids haven while mum and dad can enjoy some peace eating a meal and keeping a watchful eye. There’s plenty of room to run around complete with lawn space, play equipment (which is not fenced so young children need to be surpervised) and games. Curb your hunger with your choice of a café menu (think pastries, coffee and babycinos) or a restaurant menu complete with a ‘Mini Farmers’ Fare’ option for children aged 12 and under. The beer garden is also dog friendly.
2. Settler’s Tavern
Ingle Farm
Free meals, cupcakes and a playground are in store for children at the Settler’s Tavern. On Monday nights children eat for free when an adult orders a main meal. The children’s menu is a little different to what you might be used to at the pub. You’ll find rainbow cheese toasties, pirate or unicorn cheeseburgers and dinosaur-shaped nuggets among the offerings. Kids can also decorate a cupcake while they enjoy their free soft drink or juice. How fun!
3. Enfield Hotel
Clearview
Not only do kids up to the age of 12 eat dinner free Monday to Thursday at the Enfield Hotel, but there’s also an enclosed indoor playground, so parents can keep a watchful eye from their table. Children’s musician Johnny Star will entertain the children on Friday nights with music and games.
4. Aldgate Pump Hotel
Aldgate
Eat inside by the fire or out in the beer garden, and you’ll be able to keep an eye on the kids while they play on the outdoor playground at the Aldgate Pump Hotel. There’s a kids’ menu available, which is offered free on Monday nights. Fur-babies (dogs) are also welcome in the playground area and beer garden.
5. The Bridgewater Inn
Bridgewater
Located about 20 minutes from Adelaide, The Bridgewater Inn boasts a huge open outdoor space, which includes a nature play area thanks to the creek running through it. Kids will spend hours exploring and climbing the rocks while parents can enjoy a meal and keep a watchful eye from the two-level beer garden. Dogs are also welcome (and have their own menu). Another bonus for families – the pub is located next to the Bridgewater Playground and adjacent the Heysen Trail.
6. Paradise Hotel
Paradise
Two cinema rooms with big screens show a range of kids’ movies to keep children entertained while parents enjoy a meal at the newly renovated Paradise Hotel. These can also be booked for birthdays. Children can also get an entertainment pack with their pick from the kids’ menu.
7. Victory Hotel
Sellicks Hill
Thanks to its location surrounded by vineyards, this pub has a winery feel. The Victory Hotel has a huge grassed and enclosed outdoor space overlooking the vineyards and a seasonal menu. The kid’s menu features ‘little mains’ and ‘little sweets’, which you can enjoy while sitting on a picnic rug.
8. Brighton Metro Hotel
Brighton
For families who love a good deal, the Brighton Metro Hotel offers some great perks with their ‘all you can eat buffet’. Kids aged four years and under eat for free everyday while those aged five to 12 eat free on Mondays and Tuesdays with paying adults. On Wednesdays there’s a $70 buffet pass for a family of two adults and two children (with additional children $10 each). During school holidays and on occasions like Halloween, the pub also often has kids’ entertainment, such as magicians, face painters and cupcake decorating.
9. Rezz Hotel
Newton
The Rezz Hotel recently underwent a complete transformation, and now includes a great indoor playground and playroom with video and arcade games. Here you can enjoy casual dining while the kids make the most of the play areas, terraces and lawn space. The Little People’s Menu features seven dishes to choose from.
And now for some honourable mentions…
10. The Marryatville
Marryatville
The beautifully updated eastern suburbs pub, The Marryatville, has long been a family favourite thanks in part to the beer garden’s undercover playground complete with a twirly slide. There’s also a $12 kids’ menu with nuggets, dumplings and ice cream among the tasty offerings for children.
11. Exeter Hotel
Semaphore
Less than 1km from iconic Semaphore Beach, the Exeter Hotel features an undercover and enclosed playground to keep your kids entertained while you enjoy a pint and a parmy. This area can be booked for birthday parties, and the kids’ menu includes all the usual favourites, like nuggets and chips.
12. Village Tavern
Golden Grove
A glass-enclosed indoor playground with a tall slide will help keep the littlies entertained at the Village Tavern. There’s a $10 kids’ menu, which includes all the usual favourites. For an additional $3 a drink and ice cream can be added to the meal.
13. Halfway Hotel
Beverley
A dedicated playroom at the Halfway Hotel features an indoor playground and games, so parents can keep a watchful eye while they eat. A $10 children’s menu nuggets, fish or a cheeseburger and comes with a drink or ice cream.
14. Aberfoyle Hub Tavern
Aberfoyle Park
Adjoining the family bistro at the Aberfoyle Hub Tavern is an enclosed indoor playground and play space for kids to enjoy in between bites and to give parents a moment to enjoy their meals. A $9 kids menu includes a drink or ice cream.
15. Victoria Hotel
O’Halloran Hill
Parents can sit back and enjoy their meal while keeping a watchful eye over their children in the glass-enclosed indoor playground at the Victoria Hotel. The kids’ menu features all the usual favourites and offers the option of adding a sundae for an additional cost.
