1. Adelaide Tonight with Bob Downe and Willsy
Transport yourself back to Adelaide in the ’70s – the golden age of weeknight television, when Channel 9 hosted the popular Adelaide Tonight show.
This year, the Adelaide Cabaret Festival is recreating the variety show, with an hour of fun, running 3 weekends in a row. Your hosts will be the award-winning Bob Downe and SA’s beloved Anne Wills.
They’ll be joined on stage with a collection of other artists, changing each weekend. Find out more about the show and prepare yourself for a load of laughs under the shelter of the beautiful Spiegeltent.
2. Introspective, Eddie Perfect
Former Artistic Director of the Adelaide Cabaret Festival and one of Australia’s most respected musical talents, Eddie Perfect is a not-to-be-missed performer in this year’s program.
Having recently returned to Australia after living in New York for many years, Perfect is set to hit the stage for 2 performances only, both at the atmospheric Dunstan Playhouse.
While you might recognise some of the tunes, there’ll also be songs that have never been recorded. In them, Eddie will reflect on his life in Manhattan, what it was like to write for Broadway musicals, and his move back to his hometown of Brunswick where his musical career began.
Be prepared for a candid, musical journey with Eddie on vocals and piano, accompanied by violin and cello. Book your tickets now.
3. Cabaret film screening
Don your best 1930s gear and head on over to the Festival Theatre for a special screening of the cult classic Cabaret. See Liza Minnelli in one of her most famous roles as Sally Bowles, alongside Michael York as Brian Roberts.
Director Bob Fosse won an Academy Award for his direction of this film, and it’s since stood the test of time as a popular movie throughout the decades.
Helpmann Academy Award-nominated cabaret performer Kim David Smith will make a special appearance at the screening. Book your tickets now.
4. The Art of Protest, Vince Jones
One for the history-buffs, The Art of Protest explores the history of the protest song through storytelling, song and music.
Famous Australian jazz musician Vince Jones leads the performance and explores musical moments in protests through the ages, from Bob Dylan to Joni Mitchell.
He’s joined by Brian Nankervis (RocKwiz) who narrates the journey, and a collection of some of the country’s top jazz musicians. Playing for a single weekend over 2 evenings, this showing is a world-first, not to be missed. Book your tickets now.
5. The Blind Date Project
Improvisation is a performance style that takes a certain finesse, quick wit and exceptional performance skills. You’ll see all of these on display in The Blind Date Project.
The show has seen sold out sessions in cities near and far, from New York City to Melbourne, and now we’re lucky to have it land in Adelaide for 10 shows throughout the festival period.
Serbian-Australian Bojana Novakovic is the star of the production, with her character, Anna, attending a series of blind dates at a karaoke bar. Novakovic is joined by a different actor playing the part of her date every evening of the improvised performance. Watch the action right in front of you as the director communicates via phone.
The best bit? No show is ever the same – each is a truly unique theatre experience. Book your tickets now.
