Many of our state’s bike trails are receiving significantly higher pedal traffic this year, according to data from the City of Charles Sturt and the Bicycle Institute of SA.

Figures for March to June 2020 increased by at least 30% on the previous year on both the River Torrens Linear Path and the Outer Harbor Greenway. Some months, including April and May, saw cyclist numbers double on the Torrens Linear Path.

To coincide with this increase of 2 wheels on our roads, RAA’s launching a survey to find out what you – our members and road users – think are the most dangerous spots for cyclists.

We’ll then use your feedback to campaign for improvements.

By taking part in the survey, you can nominate up to 10 on-road cycle lanes or off-road cycle paths that pose a risk to riders.

RAA’s Senior Manager of Safety and Infrastructure, Charles Mountain, says this inaugural Risky Rides survey complements our successful Risky Roads initiative that’s been running since 2017, where road users can nominate trouble spots on our metro and regional streets.

“That survey has generated some significant wins for the community and I hope this latest cycling version can get similar results for those on 2 wheels,” Mr Mountain says.

“RAA’s here to represent all road users and we know many of our members are cyclists too.

“So whether you’re a bike rider, or a motorist who’s come across an unnerving spot on the road – say a bike lane that suddenly ends – we’d love to hear your thoughts.”

A recent survey found 77% of RAA members support more bike lanes in the state and more than half of members also supported the extension of cycle-lane operating hours.

“Overall, our members support initiatives that provide a safe environment for cyclists, vulnerable road users and pedestrians,” Mr Mountain says.

“But it’s important this increase also comes with the right infrastructure to support the safety of all road users.”
