South Australia has its fair share of unique icons too, from Balfours frog cakes and the Mall’s Balls to fritz and Farmers Union Iced Coffee.

1. Pick up a bag of FruChocs

Created in 1948, these fruity chocolate treats are an official icon of South Australia, inducted in 2005 by the National Trust.

The tasty morsels were originally produced to use excess fruit from the Riverland and Barossa but have gained a cult following in recent times.

2. Score the best seats at Adelaide Oval

Adelaide Oval has been regarded as one of the most beautiful places to play cricket by some of the game’s greats.

You’ll understand why once you’ve made the exhilarating climb to the Eastern Stand and walked across to the Southern Stand.

While Adelaide Oval has seen some extensive renovations over the past few years, it’s still managed to keep its charm.

3. Float along the River Torrens

South Australians, along with visitors to the state, should take a cruise on the Popeye at least once.

4. Eat a pie or sausage roll at Port Elliot

One of the most popular bakeries in South Australia is just an hour’s drive from Adelaide. You’ll find it on the Fleurieu Peninsula in the beachside town of Port Elliot.

Here you’ll find all your bakery favourites like juicy sausage rolls, pies, pasties and chocolate doughnuts that’ll melt in your mouth.

If you’re looking for something a bit fancier, the Port Elliot Bakery features a new gourmet doughnut every month.

You might fancy the espresso martini doughnut or another sweet fried pastry which plays on a traditional crème brulee.

5. Down an iced coffee

Ever tried an SA tradie breakfast? You only need 2 ingredients: a Vili’s sausage roll and a Farmer’s Union Iced Coffee to wash it down. You won’t regret it.

If you’re looking for an iced coffee with a bit more flare, try CIBO Espresso – another SA institution.

6. Experience Mad March

Are you a fan of the arts? Maybe you’re a comedy connoisseur or love the roar of V8 Supercars.

If you’re a true South Australian, you’ll want to experience Mad March at least once.

See a show at the Fringe, chill out at WOMADelaide, witness the power of the Supercars at the Superloop Adelaide 500 or take in the arts at the Adelaide Festival.

7. Test your game at The Beachouse (once Magic Mountain)

Glenelg’s Magic Mountain may be a distant memory, but the legend lives on at the The Beachouse, which replaced the old amusement park.

The Beachouse has many of the fan-favourite rides that once called Magic Mountain home. Enjoy a nostalgic round of mini golf, slip down the famous water slides or make a splash on the bumper boats.

8. Pose for a photo at the Malls Balls

If you’ve ever walked through Rundle Mall, you might’ve noticed the two larger-than-life steel spheres.

Since artist Bert Flugelman’s sculpture was installed in 1977, it’s become a South Australian icon – and a popular meeting place for friends.

Take in this piece of artwork, officially titled On Further Reflection, and grab a snap while you’re there.
