There’s nothing better than enjoying a cup of hot chocolate on a cold winter’s day. But have you ever tried a bubble gum flavoured hot chocolate or had your face imprinted on one? Here’s where you can try one that's a little bit different than usual in SA.
1. Koko Black
Adelaide Arcade, Rundle Mall
Welcome to utter decadence in a cup. Every morning, Koko Black brews its signature blend of 54% dark Belgian chocolate, thickened cream, and milk for two hours to have its velvety smooth hot chocolate ready to pour. Flavours include classic Belgian, mocha, chilli, and orange. There’s also a hot chocolate affogato that’s poured over vanilla bean ice cream, and hot chocolate flights which include three pralines.

2. Red Cacao
Stirling
Looking to spice up your life? If you’re ready for some heat, take a trip to the Adelaide Hills and try an Aztec hot chocolate at Red Cacao. The combo features chilli, cinnamon, and rich dark chocolate for an instant sweet hit. As well as the usual (and delicious) Vienna, mocha, milk, dark or white hot chocolate range, the café also offers salted caramel, ginger, orange and 100% cacao options. What are you waiting for?

3. The Barossa Valley Chocolate Company Café
Barossa Valley
The Barossa Valley Chocolate Company boasts more than 250 chocolate products made from milk, dark, white, and ruby varieties. Offering an educational experience, as well as one to delight the tastebuds, visitors can watch the team of chocolatiers through a viewing window as they create chocolatey goodness. The café, meanwhile, offers DIY hot chocolates where you stir in their in-house made hot chocolate frogs from their signature or specialty range, which includes honeycomb, peppermint and chilli.
4. Chocolatree
North Adelaide
Fancy a bubble gum hot chocolate? How about peanut butter, coconut or a short chocolate (like a short black, but chocolate)? Berry Bliss, Crunchy Balls, White Matcha Choc? When it comes to hot chocolate flavours, Chocolatree’s menu has a whole page dedicated to them. Using Belgium chocolate buds melted in warm milk, this is a must try for chocolate aficionados.

5. Commissary
Rose Park
Order a Hot Chocolate Sphere at Rose Park’s Commissary and get ready to combine a little bit of science with a whole lot of deliciousness. The milk comes in a cute little bottle while the hero of the dish – a chocolate sphere – sits in a glass. The two come together when you pour the warm milk over the chocolate and watch it melt before your eyes. Give it a good stir and voilà, your hot chocolate is ready to enjoy.

6. Fred Eatery
Aldgate
Meet Fred. Fred’s hot chocolate boasts 100% African cacao beans and some sugar cane for added sweetness. For those wanting something a little more adventurous, you can infuse your drink with a natural orange oil for a sweet citrus hit. There’s a vegan option, too.
7. Juniper and Pine Café
South Brighton
“But first, let me take a selfie.” Quoting a line from hit song #SELFIE by The Chainsmokers, that’s actually what you’ll be doing when you order a hot chocolate (or any other hot beverage) from South Brighton’s Juniper and Pine Café. The cafe has a hot chocolate printer that sprinkles chocolate powder over your milky beverage and imprints an image of your face – or just about anything you like – similar to a regular ink printer. Send your image to them via Facebook Messenger and see the work of art appear in a cup.
