From the Flinders to the Fleurieu, stunning scenery abounds in South Australia. Grab your camera, hit the road and discover SA's top 8 lookouts.

1. The Remarkable Rocks, Kangaroo Island

Perched upon a stony stage overlooking the wild Southern Ocean, Kangaroo Island’s Remarkable Rocks are a cluster of gigantic artfully shaped boulders, 500 million years in the making. Follow a snaking wooden boardwalk around the iconic rocks. When you reach the lookout, be sure to pause and take it all in – this would have to be one of the most spectacular views SA has to offer.

The Remarkable Rocks are located in Flinders Chase National Park, and are easily accessible by a bitumen road.

2. Razorback Lookout, Flinders Ranges

The Flinders Ranges are hauntingly beautiful, boasting an ancient, rugged landscape unparalleled in its grandeur. One of the best places to see the Flinders Ranges in all of its glory is Razorback Lookout along the iconic Bunyeroo Valley Rd. Visit at sunset to see the 600-million-year-old landscape turn a deep shade of red.

3. Mount Osmond, Adelaide Hills

Watch Adelaide’s city lights sparkle at night from atop Mount Osmond, just a 15-minute drive from the CBD. Surrounded by lush greenery, wildlife parks and walking trails, it’s also the perfect place to escape the rat race during the day, without having to travel for hours.

4. Headings Cliff Lookout, Riverland

Stretching 2508km, the meandering Murray is the third largest navigable river in the world after the Amazon and the Nile. See the lifeblood of Australia at its most photogenic from Headings Cliff Lookout. Here, ghostly red gums border spectacular riverside cliffs, with the majestic river flowing below.

One of the best ways to see Headings Cliff Lookout is on the epic Murray River Walk.

5. The Bluff, Fleurieu Peninsula

The charming town of Victor Harbor is known for its laid back coastal lifestyle and proximity to a smorgasbord of beautiful beaches. One of the best places to take in fantastic Fleurieu views is Rosetta Head (commonly known as The Bluff). Wind your way to the top of the 100m high mountain on a range of scenic walking trails. At the summit, feast your eyes on panoramic views of Victor Harbor, Granite Island and the crashing ocean. In winter, Rosetta Head is a popular whale watching spot, so bring your binoculars!

6. Blue Lake Lookout, Limestone Coast

Believe it or not, Mount Gambier’s aptly named Blue Lake was once an active volcano. Today, the 72m deep crater is filled with striking cobalt water which changes colour throughout the year. Join a tour to learn about the lake’s fascinating history, or hit the 3.6km walking trail around its circumference, stopping at the Blue Lake Lookout to take it all in. The Blue Lake is an easy 5-minute drive away from the town of Mount Gambier.

7. Adelaide Oval, Adelaide

The Adelaide Oval is one of the most advanced, state-of-the-art outdoor venues in Australia, having undergone a massive makeover in 2014. With a seating capacity of more than 50,000 and cutting-edge sound and lighting, the oval plays host to massive national and international sporting events and concerts. Climb to the very top of the oval’s historic grandstands on the Commonwealth Bank RoofClimb. Nothing compares to the views of Adelaide from the 50m lookout.

8. Ethel Wreck Beach Lookout, Yorke Peninsula

Innes National Park is a coastal playground, boasting kilometres of pristine sand, surf, walking trails, wildlife and bushland. Bring a tent and stay the night, then spend your days fishing, surfing and bushwalking. Incredible views are easy to come by in the National Park, but nothing compares to Ethel Wreck Beach Lookout. Here, when the tide is out, you can see the skeleton of the 1876 Ethel shipwreck laid bare, surrounded by crashing waves and dramatic cliffs.
