7 best things about Tasmania

Are you in need of an island getaway? Head a little further south to Tassie. You won't be disappointed, especially when you can save while exploring, just by being an RAA member. Here are 7 experiences to add to your itinerary.

1. Tassie at twilight

Get a bird’s-eye view of Tasmania’s greenery during an adrenaline-fuelled canopy ride at Launceston’s Hollybank Treetops Adventure Park. Soar from one platform to the next about 30m above the forest floor.

2. Marvel at MONA

Described by owner and artist David Walsh as Disneyland for adults, the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) is an architectural masterpiece in itself. Spiralling staircases lead to an underground viewing area full of quirky and dark satire paintings. It’s a must-visit any time of year, but particularly spectacular in winter when it plays host to the annual Dark Mofo music and arts festival.

3. Unleash the devil

What Tassie trip would be complete without a deal with the devil? Head to Hobart’s Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary for a Tasmanian devil sighting and, if you’re game enough, maybe even a cuddle with these little marsupials. Although they’re known for their attitude, pungent odour and extremely loud screech, we still think they’re the cutest!

4. Slow the pace

Named in 1773 by a ship captain who spotted beach fires lit by Indigenous Australians, the Bay of Fires on the north-east coast is a picturesque place to slow the pace of your stay. Walk the white sandy beaches before heading to the nearby Bay of Fires Winery for a glass of sparkling Tasmanian Cuvée Rose.

5. Island paradise

Discover Tasmania’s unspoilt coastline on a boat tour around Bruny Island, admiring towering cliffs, forests and – if you’re lucky – a glimpse of dolphins and whales.

6. Stroll Salamanca

Bursting with colourful arts, crafts and unique garments, you’re sure to find a memento in Tasmania among more than 300 stalls at Salamanca Market, open Saturdays from 8.30am to 3pm. Spend the morning browsing before heading to Hobart’s nearby harbour for a stroll by the waterside.

7. Hike Cradle Mountain

Are you up for a challenge and have a good week or so to spare? Put on a pair of sturdy boots and trek the Overland Track in Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park. Spanning 65km, this 6-day trek is known as one of Australia’s most famous hiking tracks.
