With the festive season upon us, there’s no truer carol lyric than “O Christmas tree O Christmas tree you stand in splendid beauty!”
And, South Australia has its fair share of beautiful Christmas trees on display throughout December. Here are a few you must see.
1. State Library South Australia
Until 7 January
Enter the historic State Library of South Australia’s Mortlock Chamber and gaze at this enchanting seven-metre Christmas tree.
Spanning the heigh of level one of the Mortlock Chamber, the majestic tree’s lights and star twinkle.
There’s a Christmas reading nook for visitors, and from 4–8 December school choirs will perform. If your little ones want to hear a tale or two, various storytellers will be sharing their favourite Christmas stories throughout December.

2. Adelaide Arcade
December
Opening in 1885, the historic Adelaide Arcade comes alive in December with Christmas decorations adorning the rafters.
The giant Christmas trees are decorated with red, green and gold baubles, and toy soldiers sit atop the balconies at the arcade’s entrance.
Enjoy a stroll around the arcade and check out the many festive windows displays or collect a free Christmas Trail brochure and follow the clues.

3. Victoria Square/Tarntanyangga
18 November–2 January 2024
Soaring 25m into the sky, the giant Christmas tree in Victoria Square/Tarntanyangga lights up the city sky.
The 13,616 individually programmed LED lights perform a choreographed dazzling display lasting 10 minutes.
On warm summer nights, the fountains are switched on for kids to splash around, while various other festive events will take place throughout December.
4. Lights of Lobethal Festival
9–23 December
It isn’t necessarily one Christmas tree that stands out in Lobethal, but dozens of light displays scattered through the Adelaide Hills town as part of the Lights of Lobethal Festival.
Take a drive up to Lobethal and be dazzled by the largest community lights display in the Southern Hemisphere. The festival features dozens of lights displays, a pageant night and live entertainment.

5. Loxton Lights Festival
25 November–31 December
An enormous Christmas tree dazzles in Loxton’s town centre for the town’s annual lights festival. The local community comes together to create a memorable Christmas experience for visitors.
Spectacular Christmas light displays are on show throughout the town and homes are decorated with more than 350 hand-painted Christmas scenes.
